BPL Franchises Demand Five-Year Calendar Amid Financial Crisis, Player Dues
Leading BPL franchises have called for a five-year tournament calendar to address severe financial instability and persistent player payment delays. The move aims to restore the league's appeal and competitiveness in the global T20 landscape.

BPL franchises are pushing for a crucial five-year calendar, citing dire financial instability and player payment delays as the league's competitive edge erodes. This urgent demand follows a high-stakes meeting with BCB President Tamim Iqbal.
Representatives from Rangpur Riders, Dhaka Capitals, and Rajshahi Warriors conveyed collective concerns over the BPL's declining appeal to top international players, even suggesting a temporary halt to overhaul its foundations.
Rangpur Riders Managing Director and CEO Ishtiaque Sadeque laid bare the grim financial reality, confirming outstanding payments to both local and overseas players from the last BPL edition due to persistent sponsor defaults.
"Commitments are made but not fulfilled, which leads to an embarrassing situation for franchises," Sadeque stated, highlighting the precarious business model.
The relentless global T20 franchise market, boasting over 20 rival leagues, continually sidelines BPL for premier talent; a fixed long-term schedule is seen as the only way to plan effectively and secure quality cricketers.
The league has recorded significant losses, approximately $3.3 million (Tk 31 crore) over the past two years, despite BCB's historical profit from BPL, with expenses sharply rising since 2015 when the board took full control.
Dhaka Capitals CEO Atik Fahad issued a clear ultimatum, stating his franchise would exit if current flaws persist, a sentiment echoed by BCB President Tamim Iqbal, who confirmed the 2026 season will not be held this year.
In response, BCB is granting new franchises five-year ownership rights from 2026, reintroducing player auctions, and mandating a 10 crore taka bank guarantee per season to safeguard player payments.
These sweeping reforms, involving external professionals and a dedicated local player tournament, mark a determined effort to rebuild the BPL into a financially robust and globally competitive T20 spectacle.
