England batter Ollie Pope has pulled out of the draft for the upcoming Afghanistan Premier League. Pope had been slated as the only centrally contracted England player in contention for the inaugural edition of the tournament, scheduled in the United Arab Emirates later this year.

Director of cricket Rob Key noted that while it is legally difficult to prevent players from participating, securing a No Objection Certificate from the England and Wales Cricket Board is mandatory. Key explained that the situation creates a moral judgment where players must decide their stance independently.

Key stated that personally he would not participate due to concerns over the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan, referencing the board's ongoing refusal to schedule bilateral series since 2021. Pope independently chose to withdraw from the draft, bypassing the need for a direct intervention from team management.

Several other English players, including Dawid Malan, Moeen Ali, James Vince, and James Rew, remain entered in the APL draft. Malan addressed the conflict between professional livelihood and moral considerations, noting that players often look to their governing bodies for decisive stance guidance.
