South Africa and Australian Test debutants have a storied history in the 21st century, but few arrivals match the dramatic impact of Pat Cummins in 2011. At just 18 years old, the teenage sensation became Australia's second-youngest ever Test cricketer during a tense series in Johannesburg.

Barely eight months after making his first-class debut for New South Wales, Cummins was thrust into the international arena following a hip injury to Ryan Harris. His journey to the Baggy Green included an immense workload in the 2010-11 Sheffield Shield final, where he bowled 48 overs for New South Wales and claimed 3/118.

That heavy domestic workload ultimately resulted in a stress fracture, yet his raw pace and accuracy had already turned heads. Former Australia captain Allan Border recalled watching the young quick from the Wanderers commentary box, noting how he ruffled feathers and made experienced batters look uncomfortable.

In the second Test at Johannesburg, Cummins announced himself emphatically with a six-wicket haul in the second innings to drag Australia back into the contest. With the Proteas threatening an unassailable lead, his fiery spell swung the momentum dramatically.

Needing a nervethin chase to secure victory, Cummins walked to the crease and coolly hit the winning runs for his side. His match figures and Player of the Match performance immediately foreshadowed the champion leader he would eventually become.

Despite this stunning introduction, a back injury would cruelly sideline him from Test cricket for the next five years. Selectors, however, never forgot the blistering five-day spell that left Australian cricket eager for his eventual return.
