Nic Maddinson's Shock Test Recall After Cancer Battle
Nic Maddinson's surprising call-up to Australia's Test squad in South Africa comes just 12 months after his successful battle against testicular cancer.

Nic Maddinson's unexpected inclusion in Australia's Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa completely caught the cricket world by surprise. The 34-year-old admitted he was left stunned when chair of selectors George Bailey delivered the selection news.
However, the milestone of returning to the national fold pales in comparison to the player's personal triumph over the past year. Last October, Maddinson was officially declared cancer-free just eight weeks after completing his final round of chemotherapy.
The batter was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2025 following a first-class fixture against Western Australia at the WACA. The illness subsequently spread to his abdominal lymph nodes and lungs, requiring intensive surgery and chemotherapy treatments.
Recalling the grueling physical toll, Maddinson previously shared how exhausting the steroid medications and hospital schedules were. Coping with severe fatigue and hair loss made everyday tasks an immense challenge during his recovery.
Upon returning to professional cricket, a strong 126-run knock for New South Wales against Victoria at the Junction Oval proved to selectors that he retained his elite form. Selectors Bailey and Tony Dodemaide noted his proven ability to score quick runs and handle spin.
The announcement triggered a frantic logistical scramble for the left-hander. While currently based in Sydney ahead of local club fixtures, his passport and treasured baggy green cap remained safely stored at his home in Byron Bay.
Maddinson quickly booked a Friday morning flight to secure his essential gear and bid farewell to his wife Bianca and young sons August and Wilder. Meanwhile, his manager rushed to a local cricket store to source extra pads and gloves.
Reflecting on his previous Test stints, Maddinson made his debut back in 2016 during a difficult period against South Africa and Pakistan. Despite early struggles and subsequent mental health breaks, a prolific run-scoring stint with Victoria saw him average 52.37 in the Sheffield Shield between 2018 and 2024.
