Suresh Raina Criticizes IPL Impact Player Rule, Highlights Disadvantage for Bowlers
Four-time IPL champion Suresh Raina has strongly criticized the Impact Player rule, stating that it penalizes bowlers and allows fit players to avoid playing a complete role on the field.

Former India cricketer and four-time IPL champion Suresh Raina has voiced strong opposition to the tournament's controversial Impact Player rule, asserting that the regulation heavily favors batters while severely penalizing bowlers.
Introduced to enhance tactical flexibility and increase scoring rates, the rule allows teams to replace a playing XI member at any stage during the match, effectively transforming the dynamic into a twelve-player contest.
Highlighting the drawbacks of the system, Raina pointed out that physical fitness and fielding participation are being sidelined because teams can now afford to use specialists in isolated roles.
"Even fit players just bat and sit down in the dugout, leaving bowlers to bear the entire brunt of the aggressive batting conditions," Raina observed, emphasizing that cricket should remain a balanced contest between bat and ball.
The former Chennai Super Kings star explained that the option to insert an additional batsman dilutes the importance of genuine all-rounders, as teams no longer feel compelled to develop players who can contribute with both bat and ball.
Raina is the latest high-profile figure to join a growing coalition of critics, following similar concerns previously raised by Indian national team captain Rohit Sharma and several prominent international stars.
Cricket experts argue that the lack of opportunities for young all-rounders to bowl under pressure could have a detrimental effect on the national team's long-term balance in multi-over formats.
With discussions surrounding the future playing conditions of the league gaining momentum, the Indian board faces increasing scrutiny over whether to retain or revise the rule in upcoming editions.
