South African batsman Tony de Zorzi has joined the growing injury list ahead of the first test against Australia after being ruled out by a hamstring strain.

Cricket South Africa confirmed the development on Saturday, noting that the 29-year-old suffered the injury while fielding during the final one-day international in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

Subsequent scans conducted on Friday revealed the extent of the damage, and no immediate replacement has been named by the selectors.

The Proteas are facing a severe fitness crisis ahead of the match starting in Durban on Friday, having already lost fast bowlers Ottneil Baartman, Kwena Maphaka and Lungi Ngidi to hamstring issues.

Leading pacemaker Kagao Rabada also remains doubtful for the opening fixture, though he has been included in a preliminary squad.

Rabada's availability will be assessed following an intra-squad match scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.
