Travis Head has issued a stinging broadside at former Australian greats for being too eager to put the bullet through representatives of the current Test team ahead of the upcoming series against South Africa beginning on Friday.

The dual-Allan Border Medallist's rebuke follows former star opener Matthew Hayden’s critique of the selection of Nic Maddinson on a podcast earlier this week.

The current group has also faced strong criticism from an array of former players regarding their performances against Bangladesh in Darwin.

Head believes the side is unfairly judged by a group of past players who are quick to write off current representatives.

While acknowledging the vast respect the team holds for the previous generation, Head noted that criticism is simply part of the caper.

The divide between current stars and past champions has roots in Justin Langer’s departure as coach back in 2022.

Hayden recently declared that Australian cricket was promoting major mediocrity and criticized current selection explanations.

Head defended his own strong record as an opener and brushed off calls regarding his batting position ahead of the opening Test.
