Tanzid Hasan made his first Test century on Friday, helping Bangladesh take the lead against Australia in Darwin.

The left-handed opener reached 100 from 188 balls by pushing Nathan Lyon to long-off for a single. He was dismissed for 101 from 197 balls, with eight fours and a six.

Tanzid resumed on 32 not out after Bangladesh ended the first day at 96 for 1, still 102 runs behind Australia’s 198. He and Mominul Haque then added 102 for the second wicket before Mominul was out for 49.

Their stand fell four runs short of Bangladesh’s highest second-wicket partnership in Australia, the 108-run effort by Habibul Bashar and Hannan Sarkar in Cairns in 2003.

Tanzid reached his fifty from 102 balls, but scored his next 50 in only 86. He took on Beau Webster in particular, hitting the allrounder for a six down the ground.

He also survived a chance on 62 when Steven Smith could not hold a catch at slip.

Smith had called the Darwin pitch “tricky” after Australia were dismissed for 198 on the first day. Bangladesh’s batters, however, continued to score freely, with Najmul Hossain Shanto also passing fifty.

Tanzid’s dismissal left Bangladesh 230 for 3, 32 runs ahead of Australia. Shanto was at the crease with Mushfiqur Rahim as Bangladesh looked to build a substantial first-innings lead.

The century came in only Tanzid’s second Test, less than three months after his debut against Pakistan in Sylhet. He has also played 40 ODIs and 53 T20Is, scoring an ODI century and 13 T20I fifties.

His first Test hundred has now come in Australia, against one of the world’s leading attacks.
