Karanbir Singh Sets T20I World Record for Most Runs in a Calendar Year
A Pakistani cricketer, wearing the distinctive green national kit complete with helmet and star emblem, strides across the cricket ground, bat in hand, displaying focus and determination during a match or practice.
Austrian star Karanbir Singh has shattered a global T20I record, eclipsing Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan to become the highest run-scorer in a single calendar year in men's T20 Internationals. According to the European Cricket Network, Singh has amassed an incredible 1,488 runs in 2025, decisively surpassing Rizwan's previous benchmark of 1,326 runs, set in 2021. This monumental achievement was sealed during Austria's recent four-match T20I series against Romania, played on October 18 and 19 in Bucharest. Entering the series, Singh required just 87 runs to overtake Rizwan. He did so with remarkable ease, blasting 57 off 27 balls in the opening match and following up with a blistering 90 off 46 in the second to claim the coveted record. He then continued his dominant form, adding 74 off 44 and 27 off 12 in the subsequent games, elevating his year's total to an astonishing 1,488 runs. Karanbir's prolific form didn't stop there; he also shattered two additional records previously held by Rizwan. With an impressive 127 fours struck in 2025, he now holds the record for most boundaries hit in a calendar year in T20Is, eclipsing Rizwan's 119 from 2021. Furthermore, earlier this year, Singh established a new benchmark for most sixes in a year, clearing the ropes a staggering 122 times – nearly doubling the 68 sixes hit by India's Suryakumar Yadav in 2022, which was the previous second-highest tally. The 33-year-old Austrian sensation has been a pivotal force driving the rapid growth of cricket across Europe. His remarkable consistency and aggressive batting style have propelled Austria to make significant strides in international associate-level cricket, particularly in tournaments organized by the European Cricket Council. Adding to Austria's celebrations, the same series in Romania also saw fellow batter Bilal Zalmai reach a personal milestone. Zalmai surpassed the 1,000-run mark for the year, becoming only the fourth player in T20I history to achieve this feat in a single calendar year. These twin records by Karanbir Singh and Bilal Zalmai powerfully underscore the burgeoning competitiveness of European associate nations in T20 cricket – a dynamic format increasingly being shaped by exceptional talent from outside the game's traditional powerhouses.
