Allrounder Glenn Maxwell is set to return to international cricket after recovering from a wrist injury, with Australia including him in the squad for the final three T20 matches against India later this month.
Maxwell, who missed the recent T20 series against New Zealand, was injured while training at Mount Maunganui. A powerful shot from teammate Mitchell Waye struck his wrist during a net session, leaving a minor fracture that sidelined him from competitive cricket since early October.
There had been uncertainty over his availability for the India series, but team management confirmed on Thursday that the 35-year-old has regained fitness. The five-match T20 series begins on October 29 in Canberra, following the ongoing one-day series between the two sides.
During his recovery, Maxwell took on a coaching role with the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s domestic T20 Spring Challenge, serving as assistant coach. The experience, team officials said, helped him stay engaged with the game while completing his rehabilitation.
Australia have also handed a maiden T20I call-up to 20-year-old fast bowler Mahli Beardman, who could make his international debut during the India series. Beardman has impressed selectors with his pace and control in domestic cricket.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has released Marnus Labuschagne, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott from the ODI squad ahead of the final match in Sydney. The trio is expected to rejoin their state sides for Sheffield Shield matches as part of their preparations for the Ashes series starting November 21.
In their place, uncapped allrounder Jack Edwards has earned a first-time call-up for the final ODI. Edwards recently stood out during Australia A’s tour of India, scoring 88 in a four-day match in Lucknow and 89 in a List A fixture in Kanpur. His inclusion is expected to bolster Australia’s batting depth in the series finale.
