Former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from T20 internationals, bringing an end to a distinguished 14-year career in the shortest format. The 35-year-old confirmed that he will continue to play Tests and ODIs, beginning with the upcoming home series against the West Indies in December. Williamson represented New Zealand in 93 T20Is since making his debut in 2011, scoring 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44, with 18 half-centuries and a highest score of 95. He captained the side in 75 matches, including two World Cup semi-finals and the 2021 final against Australia. “It’s something that I’ve loved being part of for a long period of time, and I’m grateful for the memories and experiences,” Williamson said. “It’s the right time for myself and for the team. This gives clarity for the series ahead and for the next T20 World Cup. There’s so much young talent ready to take this team forward.” New Zealand coach Rob Walter praised Williamson’s influence on and off the field. “You can’t underestimate his value — not just his performances, but his leadership, calmness, and example. He’s been a sounding board for many players and a true team man,” Walter said. Williamson, who stepped down from the white-ball captaincy earlier this year, said he was confident in the leadership of Mitchell Santner. “Mitch has such a good understanding of the game and this format. Now it’s their time to take the Black Caps forward, and I’ll be supporting from afar.” New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink hailed Williamson’s legacy, calling him “one of the greatest to wear the fern.” He added, “His contribution to T20 cricket has been immense, and we fully support his decision as he continues his journey in Tests and ODIs.” Williamson’s next match is likely to be for Northern Districts in the Plunket Shield later this month, as preparation for the Test series against the West Indies starting December 2 in Christchurch.
