India head coach Gautam Gambhir said his team must continue to evolve to stay ahead in the fast-changing world of T20 cricket, urging his players to focus on impact rather than personal milestones.
Since taking charge after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph, Gambhir has overseen a dominant run in the format, with 26 wins from 30 matches and seven consecutive series victories, including a recent success against Australia. His tenure has been defined by aggressive play and tactical flexibility — traits he believes are vital ahead of India’s home title defence next year.
“T20 cricket will evolve, and as coaches if we don’t evolve, we’ll be behind the eight ball,” Gambhir told bcci.tv. “We want to be ahead of T20 cricket. That’s what the young boys have adapted to, and hopefully they continue to evolve.”
The former opener stressed the importance of a “fluid batting order,” saying the focus must be on impact, not averages or strike rates. “Except the openers, the batting order is flexible. It’s not about how many runs you score; it’s about the impact you create in a situation,” he said.
Calling the approach “high risk, high reward,” Gambhir said India want to play “fearless but smart cricket.”
He also highlighted India’s depth in all-round options, pointing to Axar Patel and Washington Sundar as examples of players who can “get into the side purely as batters.”
“It’s a great luxury to have,” he said. “They’ll play a very important role at the World Cup. We’re not where we want to be yet, but hopefully we’ll get there in three months.”
