India progressed to the Asian Games semi-finals after rain washed out their quarter-final match against Afghanistan without a ball being bowled.
Persistent rain washed out the Asian Games men's cricket quarter-final match between India and Afghanistan without a single ball being bowled. The abandonment meant that India advanced directly to the semi-finals by virtue of being the higher-ranked T20I side in the tournament.
Tournament conditions dictated that if a knockout fixture could not be completed due to weather, the team with the higher ranking would progress. This identical scenario occurred earlier in the day when Pakistan's quarter-final against Hong Kong was also called off due to wet conditions at the venue.
Nisshin has faced severe weather disruptions throughout the competition, with four consecutive matches affected by rain, three of which failed to register a single delivery. The venue will also host the upcoming semi-final fixtures scheduled for October 1.
India now awaits the outcome of the final quarter-final match between Bangladesh and Malaysia to determine their opponent in the next round. The Men in Blue previously captured the gold medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Games during a similarly rain-affected final.
Reflecting on tournament challenges, the Indian leadership noted the unpredictable nature of local conditions. "The pitches here cannot be set to a certain standard, so to adapt is key. It will be challenging for all the teams," management remarked regarding pitch standardisation.
Addressing the external pressure of representing the national side, team representatives emphasised maintaining internal standards. "Whenever you represent India, there are a lot of expectations, that you have to finish at the top. We have set a standard as a team, and we must try to transcend that in every match."
