Travis Head Hits Back at Australia Greats Over Modern Batting Critiques
Australia vice-captain Travis Head has criticized past players for unfairly attacking the current batting lineup, insisting the game has changed drastically.

Australia vice-captain Travis Head has accused the nation's golden generation of putting a bullet through current players. He argued that it is entirely unfair for past cricketers to criticize the modern batting lineup given how much the sport has evolved.
Head's strong stance arrived in South Africa just a day after Matthew Hayden lashed out at selectors. Hayden had accused team management of promoting the greatest pile of mediocrity following the call-up of Nic Maddinson.
While refusing to single out specific individuals, Head took direct aim at the constant negative commentary surrounding batting averages that have dropped on a global scale. He also pointed out the sticky situation the current squad experienced with former players during Justin Langer's exit in 2022.
Head noted that some past players seemingly go after the team because they need jobs in the media, adding that the dressing room remains strong enough to handle it. He expressed disappointment that the criticism comes from a generation that the current team holds in immense respect.
Analyzing the decline in statistics, Head rejected the notion that T20 cricket is solely to blame. Instead, he emphasized that pitch conditions have changed dramatically since the turn of the century, with modern wickets offering significantly more assistance to bowlers.
Comparing historical Sheffield Shield run tallies with contemporary numbers, Head highlighted that drop-in pitches and bowler-friendly surfaces have sped up matches worldwide. Ahead of Friday's opening Test against South Africa in Durban, Head also confirmed his firm intention to continue opening the batting.
