Cummins drops shock Test hint for Marsh ahead of South Africa series

Australian captain Pat Cummins has delivered a surprise verdict on Mitchell Marsh’s red-ball prospects, stating that the veteran all-rounder should keep his options open ahead of the three-match Test series in South Africa.

Marsh has been in stellar form in limited-overs cricket, notching three whirlwind half-centuries at the top of the order during the white-ball leg against Zimbabwe and the Proteas, alongside nearly 1,000 runs across the IPL and The Hundred.

The 2024 Allan Border Medallist leads the global T20 run-scoring charts in 2026 with 1,544 runs, prompting Cummins to suggest the 34-year-old remains in calculations for a stunning Test recall.

“He definitely hasn’t retired, so you never know,” Cummins said, praising the destructive batter's ability to change the dynamic of an innings against express pace or tough wickets.

Marsh briefly returned to Sheffield Shield cricket with Western Australia last summer before announcing a red-ball retirement specifically from state duties.

However, mounting concerns over the Australian top order and a fractured finger to back-up batter Josh Inglis have pushed the veteran back into the spotlight ahead of the series beginning in Durban.

Coach Andrew McDonald noted that selectors remain comfortable adding players without recent red-ball form, emphasizing Marsh's immense value and leadership within the Australian setup.

Meanwhile, Cummins has thrown his full backing behind Marnus Labuschagne to retain his position at number three, dismissing concerns stemming from a relatively small sample size during the Bangladesh series.
