Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first in the high-profile three-Test series opener against South Africa in Durban on Friday. The visitors made notable changes to their lineup, handing Nic Maddinson a Test recall after a ten-year absence, while Cameron Green missed out with an abdominal strain and Josh Inglis was sidelined with a fractured finger.

Ahead of the contest, Matthew Hayden had criticized Maddinson's inclusion, pointing to a lack of recent first-class cricket. However, captain Cummins defended the selection at the toss, stating that the left-hander has shown good form and is well-placed for the challenge.

South Africa opted for a bowling attack featuring both spinners Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer alongside pacers Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder. Kagiso Rabada missed out as he continues his recovery from injury.

Conditions early on offered assistance to the seamers with moisture on a green-tinged surface. Marco Jansen opened the bowling for the hosts, quickly finding swing and testing the Australian openers Travis Head and Nic Maddinson.

Maddinson survived a major scare when Wiaan Mulder struck him on the pads for a loud appeal. Umpire Richard Kettleborough turned down the appeal, and South Africa surprisingly chose not to review, though replays later confirmed three reds that would have handed the Proteas their opening wicket.

Runs proved hard to come by in the early exchanges as Jansen and Mulder maintained tight lines. Australia eventually got off the mark through leg byes after a late swing evaded the wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.

Travis Head soon found the boundary by gliding a straight delivery towards the fine leg region. Despite sparse crowds in the stands at the venue, the intense battle between the two powerhouses marked a compelling start to the new World Test Championship cycle series.
