Australia Suffer ODI Series Defeat to South Africa in Johannesburg
Australia fell to a 32-run defeat against South Africa in Johannesburg as David Miller and Temba Bavuma both struck centuries, sealing the ODI series with a game to spare.
Australia suffered an ODI series defeat to South Africa with a match to spare after falling to a 32-run loss in the second encounter in Johannesburg on Sunday. Sent in to bat first at the toss, the hosts posted a formidable total of 365-9 in their allotted 50 overs.
The Proteas innings was anchored by brilliant centuries from captain Temba Bavuma and David Miller. Bavuma compiled 103 runs off 116 deliveries, while Miller unleashed a breathtaking assault, smashing 142 from just 93 balls with 12 fours and nine sixes.
Jack Edwards, featuring in only his second ODI, claimed an impressive 5-67 for the tourists, while pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood picked up 3-70, famously dismissing Aiden Markram for a golden duck off the very first ball.
In response, Australia started brightly as openers Mitch Marsh and Travis Head set an aggressive tone by dispatching the bowling to all corners. Marsh contributed 84 off 53 balls, and Head chipped in with 85 from 76 deliveries to put the visitors in a strong position early on.
However, the tourists' familiar middle-order fragility and struggles against spin were once again exposed. Slipping from 191-2 in the 25th over, they crawled to 253-6 after losing four wickets for just 62 runs in the space of 15-plus overs.
Keshav Maharaj took 2-54, Bjorn Fortuin grabbed 2-70, and Aiden Markram chipped in with 1-55 to stifle the scoring rate, supported by seamers Lizaad Williams with 3-54 and Marco Jansen with 2-53.
Left needing 113 runs from the final 10 overs, Australia mounted a spirited late counter-attack led by Xavier Bartlett, who smashed 50 off 28 deliveries. Despite his efforts, the visitors were eventually bowled out for 333 in the final over.
Reflecting on the defeat, Australia captain Mitch Marsh admitted that his side must address their middle-phase execution. The final match of the three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday in Potchefstroom as Australia look for a consolation win.
