Receiving an international debut cap from MS Dhoni is a dream reserved for a select few, and making it count with an unbeaten half-century usually guarantees a long run in the national team. Yet for left-handed opener Faiz Fazal, his maiden appearance for India in 2016 turned out to be both the peak and the final chapter of his international career.

Opening the innings against Zimbabwe in Harare, Fazal showcased supreme composure, anchoring the chase with an undefeated 55 off 61 balls. India cruised to a ten-wicket victory, but despite the flawless start, the selection panel opted for alternative options in subsequent series, leaving Fazal frozen out of international contention forever.

Heartbreak was not unfamiliar to the Nagpur-born batsman. Way back in 2004, a severe finger fracture just days before the Under-19 World Cup derailed his opportunity to showcase his talent on the global youth stage. That setback forced him to rebuild his game through the grueling grind of Indian domestic cricket.

During his early years, Fazal earned an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals, where he had the privilege of playing under the mentorship of Australian legend Shane Warne. The exposure to high-pressure franchise cricket further refined his tactical awareness and leadership qualities.

While international caps remained elusive, Fazal achieved legendary status in first-class cricket. Appointed captain of Vidarbha, he led the side to iconic back-to-back Ranji Trophy triumphs in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, rewriting the domestic hierarchy with his astute tactical acumen.

By the time he called time on his professional career, Fazal had accumulated 9,184 first-class runs, complete with 24 centuries and an admirable average hovering close to 40. His journey stands as a stark reminder of India's immense batting depth, where even an international average of 55.00 couldn't secure a second chance.
