India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss for the third consecutive time in the five-match series and opted to bowl first in Wellington. The Men in Blue retained their playing XI, leaving Ishan Kishan sidelined as he continues his recovery from injury. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi kept his spot at No.3.

New Zealand made three changes to their lineup, bringing in Matthew Fisher, Kyle Jamieson, and Adam Milne. Matt Henry was rested as part of workload management ahead of upcoming Test and ODI fixtures against India.

Openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen began the innings against Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Arshdeep Singh soon made the breakthrough by dismissing Seifert for two runs off six deliveries, caught by Axar Patel.

Despite the early setback, Finn Allen and Daryl Mitchell launched a strong counterattack. Allen capitalized on short deliveries, sending the ball soaring over the ropes with powerful strokes against the Indian bowling attack.

Daryl Mitchell anchored the innings brilliantly alongside Allen, reaching his fifty with a straight drive off Nitish Kumar Reddy. The pair pushed New Zealand past the hundred-run mark by the halfway stage.

Nitish Kumar Reddy eventually provided a breakthrough by dismissing the dangerous Allen for 40 off 25 deliveries, smartly making him hit towards the longer boundary. However, the Kiwi batters had already established a strong foundation.

Shreyas Iyer noted that adapting quickly to the unique ground dimensions in Wellington would be crucial for his side. The visitors aimed to restrict the hosts and secure an unassailable series lead.
