Travis Head answered critics questioning his credentials at the top of the order with a brilliant century in Gqeberha, providing a vital pillar of resistance for Australia.

Resuming overnight on 87, the left-hander reached his milestone by striking Marco Jansen for two boundaries in the same over, sealing the hundred with a flick through mid-wicket.

This marks Head's first Test century against South Africa and his 13th overall in the longest format, coming after his permanent promotion to open the batting during the Ashes.

Celebrations were subdued as Australia still required more than 150 runs to make South Africa bat again on a rain-marred morning.

Former Test opener Simon Katich noted that the muted reaction showed Head understood the gravity of the situation rather than personal milestones.

His defiant knock finally ended after 190 deliveries when he edged Wiaan Mulder, with the seamer's delivery jagged up into his ribs.

The innings sparked fresh tactical debates among pundits regarding whether Head is best suited to opening or batting lower down the order.

Former players including Kerry O'Keeffe and Usman Khawaja weighed in on the ongoing discussion surrounding Australia's batting lineup options.
