Bangladeshi off-spinner Md Rubel, 30, has taken the Top End T20 Series by storm on his first overseas tour, delivering a sensational five-wicket haul against NT Strike to propel the Bangladesh High Performance (HP) XI into the semi-finals.

Against all odds in typically unforgiving Australian conditions for slow bowlers, Rubel currently tops the tournament charts with an astonishing 20 wickets from just six matches, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 6.16.

His most recent masterclass unfolded on Friday, August 28, 2026, at the Marrara Cricket Ground, where he carved through the NT Strike's batting order with a devastating spell of 5 for 21 from his four overs. The hosts were restricted to 143 for 9, despite efforts from Jordan Silk (31), Matt Hammond (26), and Caelan McMahon (25).

Reflecting on his unexpected success in an interview with The Daily Star, Rubel admitted, "I just kept playing and playing." He added, "I was really surprised with how I performed here, because this is not a spin-friendly country."

The HP XI successfully navigated the chase of 144 with three wickets and ten balls to spare, spearheaded by Sabbir Rahman's crucial 47 off 37 deliveries. Contributions from Habibur Rahman Sohan (22), captain Irfan Shukkur (17), and Samiun Bashir's unbeaten 14 sealed their fifth victory in six outings.

This remarkable tour builds on a pivotal year for Rubel, who was named 'Promising Player of the Tournament' in last year's NCL T20 for his 10 wickets with Chattogram Division, followed by 20 wickets in this year's Dhaka Premier League. He credits a conscious shift years ago to develop variations beyond conventional off-spin for his current form.

His long, unfrustrated journey through lower-tier leagues, where earnings from competitions like the Chittagong League (Tk 5-7 lakh) and Dhaka League (combined Tk 8-10 lakh) provided stability, underscores his unwavering dedication.

With the Bangladesh HP XI now topping the standings and guaranteed a semi-final spot, Rubel's outstanding form in Darwin has undoubtedly intensified his hopes for a long-awaited call-up to the national team.
