Skipper Shai Hope produced a memorable century despite battling a groin injury to orchestrate a record run chase as West Indies secured a consolation five-wicket victory over India in the final one-day international on Saturday.

India had earlier posted a mammoth 351-7 in New Chandigarh, recovering from 4-2 through a career-best unbeaten 129 by KL Rahul and a breezy 92 by opener Rohit Sharma after taking a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Compelled to open the innings after Jewel Andrew sustained a finger injury in the field, Hope rewrote the record books as West Indies surpassed their previous highest successful chase of 331-5 against Ireland in May 2019.

The victory was achieved despite a controversial dismissal involving Sherfane Rutherford, who was given out caught behind on 24 after third umpire Sharfuddoula ruled he had hit the ball, despite replays showing his bat clipped his pad.

Amir Jangoo supported his captain with a 109-run second-wicket partnership, but Hope ultimately carried the team through while struggling between the wickets before unleashing a late onslaught of 40 runs from his final 16 deliveries.

Earlier in the day, Jayden Seales removed Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli early to leave India in trouble before Rohit and a fortunate Ruturaj Gaikwad staged a 137-run stand to steady the innings.

Rahul later dominated the final ten overs as India added 105 runs, but his efforts were ultimately overshadowed by Hope's indefatigable match-winning knock.
