Australia to Give Steve Smith Every Chance to Prove Fitness for Newlands Decider
Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed that key batter Steve Smith will be given maximum time to recover from a neck injury ahead of the third Test against South Africa.

Australia will give key batter Steve Smith as much time as possible to prove his fitness ahead of the third and final Test against South Africa at Newlands. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed the approach as the visitors prepare for the series decider starting on Tuesday.
Smith sustained a neck injury during South Africa's innings and 31-run victory in the second Test in Gqeberha. That heavy defeat levelled the two-match series at 1-1, setting up a high-stakes showdown in Cape Town.
Hopefully, it all goes well and he’ll be there, Cummins said regarding Smith's potential participation. The team management prefers to wait for the final piece of the puzzle before finalising the playing eleven.
In squad adjustments, Cameron Green is expected to bat in the middle order, which likely means Matt Renshaw will open alongside Travis Head. Nic Maddinson has been dropped from the touring squad ahead of the decisive encounter.
For Smith, a return to Newlands marks a visit back to the venue of the 2018 sandpaper scandal. Cummins praised the veteran's positive mindset and leadership presence during the ongoing tour.
Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne is set to retain his spot in the batting lineup. Chief selector George Bailey acknowledged the ongoing discussion surrounding Labuschagne's conversion rate, noting his ability to absorb pressure with the new ball.
