Gill 'Frustrated' After India Denied SL Sweep, Eyes WTC Final Push
Indian captain Shubman Gill expressed frustration after a drawn Colombo Test denied India a series sweep and crucial WTC points against Sri Lanka. Despite a 1-0 series win, Gill faces scrutiny as India targets a challenging path to the WTC final.

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has openly admitted his "frustration" after a resilient Sri Lankan lower order denied India a 2-0 series sweep and crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points in Colombo. Despite clinching the two-match series 1-0, the draw in the second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) left Gill lamenting a significant missed opportunity.
India had largely dominated the Colombo encounter, declaring their first innings at a commanding 503/9, featuring centuries from Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel. After bowling out Sri Lanka for 290 and enforcing the follow-on, victory seemed certain. However, Sri Lankan batter Sonal Dinusha became India's nemesis, scoring an unbeaten 133 – his third century of the series – to help his side bat through the final day, finishing 429/9 and securing an improbable draw.
"It gets very frustrating," Gill stated, explaining the slow, low-bouncing pitch hindered spinners, and Sri Lanka's purely defensive batting made dismissals exceptionally difficult. He defended enforcing the follow-on due to potential rain and ample bowling time, praising his team's "10 out of 10" effort and the immense workload on bowlers like Manav Suthar, who took 16 series wickets. Pacer Mohammed Siraj, he clarified, was simply regaining rhythm, not injured.
Gill's captaincy has, however, drawn criticism. Former batter Hanuma Vihari questioned his bowling changes following an ODI series loss to England, and Cheteshwar Pujara cited perceived defensive field placements. India currently sits fifth in the WTC standings, facing a demanding qualification path requiring at least six wins from seven remaining Tests. This includes crucial overseas assignments in New Zealand and a five-match Border Gavaskar Trophy home series against Australia starting January 21, 2027. Gill, who took over captaincy in mid-2025, remains focused on guiding India to the WTC final.
