Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi has officially commenced a pivotal three-match stint with Surrey in the County Championship, a direct strategic move orchestrated by Indian selectors.

This crucial immersion aims to acclimate the pacer to seamer-friendly conditions, a key preparation ahead of India's challenging Test series in New Zealand.

Nabi, who secured his visa and departed for England on Sunday, August 30, 2026, is slated to make his Surrey debut on September 2 against Yorkshire at The Oval.

His subsequent fixtures include matches against Sussex on September 8 at Hove and Glamorgan on September 15 at The Oval, both providing intensive red-ball exposure.

"We want Auqib to gain valuable experience in England rather than participate in the Duleep Trophy at this juncture," a BCCI source revealed, emphasizing the county stint's potential to significantly enhance his prospects for a spot in the New Zealand-bound squad.

This initiative underscores the Indian team management's unwavering focus on developing a robust red-ball fast bowling attack specifically for demanding overseas assignments.

Nabi's current career trajectory is marked by his stellar performance in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, where he claimed an remarkable 60 wickets at an average of 12.56, propelling Jammu and Kashmir to their historic maiden title win.

Despite this domestic dominance, Nabi, an injury replacement for Jasprit Bumrah in India's recent Test series against Sri Lanka, did not feature in the playing XI; this county opportunity, therefore, serves as a critical platform to firmly press his claim for national selection.

Following his Surrey commitments, Nabi is scheduled to join the India A squad for two red-ball matches against Australia A in Puducherry, commencing September 22 and September 29 respectively.

This tightly packed schedule presents a potential conflict with the Irani Cup match between Jammu & Kashmir and Rest of India, slated for October 1-5, raising questions about his availability for his state side.
